LUCY'S TOP SCORE REPORT !!!!

The top score competition on Sunday was so much fun! Those of us in the first class were busy trying to figure out the rules in the collecting ring and look at the course plan to work out a route. Luckily, once the course was built we had a full explanation and could have a walk round to decide where we were going. The basic rules are this: the bell goes and you canter through the start line which starts your clock; all fences have a point score and you jump as many as possible to accumulate maximum points; knock one down and you get no points for that fence; have a refusal and there is no penalty but you waste time; each fence can be jumped in either direction but only a maximum of twice overall; the joker is worth 200 points so ideally you want to jump it but it's the biggest fence on the course and, unlike the others you lose 200 points if you have it down; after 60 seconds the bell goes again and you have to gallop through the finish line as fast as possible; the person with the highest points wins; if two people are on equal points the one with the faster time wins.

Planning our routes was quite exciting but also took lots of brain power as we each tried to work out which was the fastest way to accumulate the most points - it certainly got the heart pumping as I can get quite competitive when it comes to show-jumping! I was keen to avoid actually walking round my route and giving the game away about what I was planning but equally some of the lines needed checking out to see if they were jumpable. The hard thing was knowing how many fences and what distance might be possible within the allowed 60 seconds. Anyway, with my route decided (sort of!) we were all back on board and ready to go. In the first class I set off like the clappers and pretty much stuck to the route I had planned. I had one fence down so the points for that one didn't count but luckily I got over the joker clear, twice. Unfortunately my second time over didn't count as the bell had gone for me to stop. I was totally oblivious to it as I couldn't hear it at all, so merrily carried on jumping a few more fences until they told me I was out of time! It was a bit slippy on some of the turns as the ground was wet on top so I was very glad I had put studs in.

In the second class I decided to abandon certain jumps that I thought were too far to travel for not enough points and would therefore take too much time. I went for a steadier round as the fences had gone up so I couldn't take so many chances. I also decided to get down to where the joker was and do two laps over that and the stile which was another high scoring fence. I heard the finishing bell this time and didn't charge round like such a demon so it was a much more organised and neat round!! Wasn't a slow one though by any means! My horse is a star and really helps me out when I turn up the speed and ask for some risky turns. He's really careful and can jump any angle so I thought he'd be quite good at a top score class. I certainly owe it to him that we did so well. Julia Reed and Roly won one of the classes and Travis and I won the other. We both go forward to jump in the area qualifier against all the other riding clubs in our area to decide who will represent Area 18 at the final at Windsor 2010...exciting stuff!! The riding club are planning another top score competition soon so have a go - we all loved it!

P.S. Sunday was obviously not enough of a jumping 'fix' for Travis as yesterday he jumped out of his strip of grass and into the arena over the gate - just because he felt like it! You would think he might be settling down at 17!
